Iceland, the stunning Land of Ice and Fire. Sadly, so many tours to this unique and fascinating land extol the virtues of its vast wilderness and in reality will keep you largely restricted to areas accessible by vehicle. Not so with our exciting trek in the Torfajökull region involving walks between simple huts which are so remote that on the earlier treks it is likely that you will not see another soul for a whole week: a wasteland fashioned by extreme natural forces that is, quite simply unique.

The landscape of Iceland is like nothing else on earth (a mixture of Tibet and Scotland). Against a backdrop of mountain, desert, giant ice-cap and cataclysmic ice-fall, we find strange natural phenomena: hot springs; the devastation of volcanoes, several of them beneath the sea or under ice-caps; the awe-inspiring effects of erosion in this newly formed landscape and giant rivers with their famed waterfalls. This is an overwhelming wilderness that offers challenge to the adventurous traveller!

Here, away from the tourist routes, venture only the occasional geologist, surveyor or adventurer, and in autumn, farmers on horseback driving their sheep from the summer pastures. Few people will cross the interior passes and it will be deserted, save for the cry of the Whimbrel and Golden Plover.
