Located in Peru’s northern highlands, the Cordilleras
Blanca and Huayhuash rise abruptly to over 6000m to provide the finest of
mountain walking among the soaring peaks and glaciers. It is an incredible
area, with fascinating flora and fauna, and the remains of pre-Inca
culture. The focal point of this area is the Callejon de Huaylas, the name
given to the Rio Santa valley which separates the Cordillera Negra (west)
from the Cordillera Blanca (east). At some 3000m above sea level, the
valley has glorious views of the snowcapped mountains throughout its
length.
Cordillera Huayhuash is about 50km to the southeast of the Cordillera
Blanca. From afar, its imposing profile resembles that of a giant saw,
with a dozen sharp summits lining a single ice-clad ridge. Situated in the
Santa valley, Huaraz is a lively little town, where we spend a few days to
acclimatise. From Huaraz, our two exciting treks traverse high passes from
where one can fully appreciate the majesty of the Andean panorama.
If you have more time, there is a possibility to book an extension to
Cuzco and Machu Picchu, or to the Amazon.
