The
trekking experience in Turkey is equal to that anywhere in the world;
beautiful scenery, high mountains, unspoilt countryside and a traditional
rural hospitality second to none. You will discover rarely explored
villages where life has continued unchanged for decades, and innumerable
ancient sites; evidence of a way of life that has gone forever. Nowhere
else can you find so many remains of old civilisations in such marvellous
condition - many only reachable on foot. From delightful coastal trails to
the high valleys of the Taurus range and the ascent of Mt Embler (3723m),
there is something here to whet the appetite of every adventurous trekker.
Our exploration of Cappadocia takes us away from the classic tourist
destinations, along ancient paths. We visit the rock churches, cave
dwellings and the bizarre formations that nature has wrought. We pass the
many ruined churches and monasteries left from the Christian period.
Whilst trekking through the Zindanonu valley we visit the Elnazar and
Sakll churches, two of the oldest Troglodyte churches of Cappadocia (9th -
10th century)
Our trek through the Taurus mountains begins at Cukurbag village and
leads first into the remote Cimbar valley. There is a magnificent view of
the impressive north face of Mt Demirkazik (3756m). Accessible via the
Celikbuyduran Pass (3450m), we make an ascent of Mt Embler (3723m) in the
Yedigoller valley. Splendid scenery opens up with the chance to see the
whole Taurus range. To reach Selale, noted for its beautiful waterfalls,
we hike through pine forest and the village of Barazama. We meet families
of Nomads called Yoruk who live in black goat hair tents and an invitation
to be their guests is a great honour. At Aciman (2100m), our crossing of
the Taurus complete, there is a panoramic view of the entire range.
