The
Alps unquestionably possess the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe
and within the whole length of the Alpine chain there are few mountain
groups more spectacular than the Dolomites. Whose gigantic, chiseled limestone peaks are monuments to the powerful forces of erosion that have
shaped them. They offer a slightly different style of scenery than
adjacent Alpine areas, our walks take you through a world of vertical
rock, snowy ledges, long screes and verdant summer pastures.
We transfer from Munich to Dobbiaco, here in the midst of
the Dolomites; in the wide Ampezzo valley and surrounded by impressive
mountains. The contrasts could hardly be more extreme; stark vertical
rockfaces and jagged spires of dolomitic limestone hang high above green
forested valleys. Originally laid down 230 million years ago, these
dramatic blocks have weathered to hues of rose, yellow and grey. Here on
the southern side of the Alps, with summits rising to 3300m, the climate
is more Mediterranean. At sunset the mountains take on a breathtaking hue
of pink, known as 'Enrosadira' or 'Alpenglow'. We stay in the valleys at
Cortina, Corvara, and Campitello, and stay at mountain huts to explore the
Tofana and Sella groups of peaks. There are wonderful panoramic views
towards the Tyrolean range and the Marmalada glacier to the South.
